Attached are articles that pertain to a Winneshiek Co. murder that occurred in Nov. 1904. I do not have online access to the local Decorah newspaper of the time and no
one outside the immediate area newspaper further identified the principal persons in this case or their family connections. As both of the principal persons are called prominent citizens there should be mentions in the Decorah newspaper further identifying them. Perhaps someone in the Decorah area can access the local newspaper at their office, the library or courthouse and further identify the principal persons in this case and their family connections.
Of Professor T. I. Gifford I could find no further information than what these articles state. As the court found him insane he most likely spent the rest of his life in an institution.
Of Mr. H. A. / H. T. / Hosen Bigelow, mentioned variously in the articles attached, I could only find the following possibilities: The IGPP shows gravestone photographs for Henry A. Bigelow 1830 - 1904 and Mary E. Bigelow 1834 - 1925 as buried in the Phelps Cemetery, Winneshiek Co., Iowa. No one outside of the Decorah newspapers carried obituaries that I can find. The 1880 Federal Census of Decorah Twp., Winneshiek Co., Iowa, enumerated on 05 June 1880, shows: H. A. Bigelow, WM, 49yrs, farmer, born Conn., parents born Conn. Mary E. Bigelow, WF, 45yrs., wife, born Conn, parents born Conn. Mary E. Reiley, WF, 28yrs., adopted daughter, born New Jersey, parents born Ireland. The 1900 Federal Census of Decorah Twp., Winneshiek Co., Iowa, enumerated on 22 June 1900 shows: Henry A. Bigelow, Head, WM, born Nov. 1830, age 69, married 47yrs., born Conn., parents born Conn. Mary E. Bigelow, Wife, WF, born May 1834, age 67yrs., married 47yrs., born Conn. father born Conn., mother born Mass. |
